The tops of our bookshelves needed something and I thought some nice plants would look great. The problem is I kill plants. And I don't like fake ones. I had been looking for the kind of plants you see on the ends of the bookshelves because I heard they are hard to kill but couldn't find them in the stores I looked. In college my plants died because I forgot to water them. Now it is because I over water them or am not consistent and when it rains it pours and the poor things can't survive. The one exception is the middle plant which is a peace lily that Andy bought me when we were dating. It has had many a near death expereince and hats off to the peace lily because it can turn black and have all of it's leaves lying pathetically on the dry soil, then be douced with water and come back to life. It is just a little bigger than when Andy bought it for me 3 years ago. But, by golly, it's still alive. (Peace Lilies grow to three feet or so) Here is a beatiful peace lily I bought thinking it might go on the shelves but it is too big. I wanted to buy big, beautiful plants since I knew I was not capable of getting them to that point on my own.

I did finally find the hard to kill very typical house plants to go on either end of our book cases and I also bought a nice fern. I'm not sure where to put the fern and the big peace lily, but I will do my best to keep them looking as nice as they do right now. Cross your fingers.

Good work on keeping that peace lily alive. It has definitely seen some hard times. I like the look of the plants on top of your bookshelves.
Ryan gave me a christmas cactus (very romantic :) ) when we were dating. It only had flowers on it when he originally gave it to me and that was it. It finally got one bud on it, and I was so excited for it, and on the trip to Utah (when we moved to utah) the bud got pinched off somehow. It lasted another year or so and then died for no good reason. I try really hard with plants and I do okay, but not great. For example, it looks like my lilly of the valley is dying... so I'm impressed that you were able to keep that peace lilly alive. good luck with your plants, I hope they make it. :). I like the fact that your peace lilly is barely any bigger- makes me smile. :)
My mom is amazing with plants and has a christmas cactus that blooms regularly that I gave her in grade school! (It was one of those things where you plant a part of a plant and see if it grows...) She even gave part of it to my Grammy who now also has a beautiful plant. So sad how some things just don't carry on...
lol. when I say that it makes me smile that your lilly isn't any bigger, it's not to laugh at you or anything like that. I just think it's funny that it hasn't grown. sorry if I came off negative. i didn't know you could grow christmas cactus' from cuttings...I might have to try that some time.
Oh, no don't worry!!! No offense taken!
I absolutely adore plants in my home and they really brighten the place up. My living room has about six or seven plants in it including a peace lily which is doing very well. My husband finds them irritating but I love them.
